Volume is the amount of space an object takes up. The units of volume are cubic. To find the volume o a prism we use the formula:
V = B • h
*IMPORTANT*
The capital “B” stands for the “area” of the base shape, and the “h” stands for the height of the prism.
Example 1:
Step 1: Write the fomula
V = B • h
Step 2:Find the area of the base shape.
The base shape is a rectangle with the dimensions of 6 inches by 5 inches.
So, 6 • 5 = 30
The area of the base shape is 30 in2
Step 3: Substitute the variables in the formula with the information you have.
V = 30 • 4
Step 4: Solve by multiplying the area of the base shape times the height of the prism.
V = 30 • 4
V = 120in3
Example 2: Find the volume of a triangular prism
Step 1: Write the fomula
V = B • h
Step 2: Find the area of the base shape
In this problem the base shape is a triangle. So, we use the formula of A=(b•h)÷2 to find the area of the triangular base.
A=(b•h)÷2
A=(9•12)÷2
A=(108)÷2
A=54cm2
Step 3: Substitute the variables in the formula with the information you have.
V = 54 • 18
Step 4: Solve by multiplying the area of the base shape times the height of the prism.
V = 54 • 18
V = 972in3
