Making Inferences NOT Predictions
Prediction
- part of inferring
- can check your accuracy as you read
- can find if you were right or wrong
Inference
- more precise
- reading between the lines
- filling in (in your head) what’s not written in the text
Good Readers…
- infer to figure out what the author is saying
- read between the lines
- look for clues in pictures or words to help them figure out what the book is about
- keep thinking if their inference is correct or needs to be revised
Ways to begin inferring…
- The story said ____which made me think…
- I think ____will happen because…
- When I read___it made me realize…
- I can tell___(character) is___(character trait) because…
- How the character acts tells me…
- How the character feels tells me…
- What the character says tells me…
