# Mixed Numbers to Improper Fractions

A mixed number is made up of a whole number and a fraction.
example:  $2&space;\frac{4}{5}$

the 2 is the whole number, and the  $\frac{4}{5}$  is the fraction

Using the example above, we can rename a mixed number to an improper fraction by:
1: Multiplying the denominator by the whole number. 5 x 2 = 10
2.Add the product with the numerator. 10 + 4 = 14
3. The sum now becomes your new numerator.  $\frac{14}{?}$
4. The denominator stays the same.  $\frac{14}{5}$

So  $2\frac{4}{5}$  as an improper fraction is  $\frac{14}{5}$
